Youngsters were given the opportunity to try their hand at rugby for the first time during a community open day held by Thanet Wanderers RUFC, sponsored by London Array.

The free fun day, held at the club’s home at St Peter’s Recreation Ground, Broadstairs, saw existing and new players take part in a series of touch rugby games and hone their skills during a range of master-class sessions.

Guests of honour included Broadstairs-born Matt Corker, captain of London Welsh RFC, Rachel Burford, who has won 45 caps at Centre for England Women, South Thanet MP Laura Sandys and Mayor of Broadstairs, Cllr Rosalind Binks.

These guests were called upon to hand out trophies to players and coaches involved in Wanderers’ junior sides from U7 to U17 following their successes in a number of tournaments.

Chris Marson, Thanet Wanderers RUFC’s Vice President, said: “I would like to thank our honoured guests, club members and many visitors whose presence in numbers helped make the day so memorable.

“I’d like to also thank our sponsors, London Array, for giving our goodie bags and prizes and for their invaluable support throughout the day.”
